The San Diego & Imperial Counties Pipe Trades Joint Apprenticeship Committee dispenses applications for apprenticeship training in the pipe trades industry to all qualified applicants on a non-discriminatory basis. 

MINORITIES AND WOMEN ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY 

TO QUALIFY: 

APPLICANTS MUST REGISTER AT SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY COLLEGE (1313 –12TH AVE., SAN DIEGO, CA 92101) PRIOR TO BEING SCHEDULED FOR THE PLACEMENT TEST  visit their web site at: http://studentweb.sdccd.edu. (Online Services/Reg-e/Apply Online/Start a New Application). Then make an appointment to take the test, please call 619/388-3540.  Please inform the person you speak with that you are applying for the UNION PLUMBING & PIPEFITTING APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM.  

The applicant must apply in person and have the following documents and identification with them, and must be at least 18 years of age: 

  1. Test results with passing scores from San Diego Community College.
  2. High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate (originals); if you do not have your high school diploma you must have your transcripts from your high school with your name, birth date and date of graduation.  It must be stamped with the school seal and received in a sealed envelope from the school. 
  3. An original birth certificate only –we do not accept photostat copies of the birth certificates,  hospital certificates, baptismal records or the abstract birth certificates.  If you were not born in this country, you must provide a translated copy of your birth certificate and INS proof of your right to live and work in this country.
  4. A valid California Driver License (with photo) Applicant must have reliable transportation.

Applications are taken every THURSDAY BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 8:00AM and 3:30PM, at Local Union 230 offices located 6313 Nancy Ridge Drive, San Diego, CA  92121, Please call (858) 554-0586 for directions.         

APPLICATION:

The application must be filled out at the time and place of applying.  The completed application must be submitted with the all the above-mentioned documents.  If the applicant is missing any of the above-mentioned documents, the application cannot be taken.  Applicant’s place on the eligibility list is by the date the complete application is received. 

INTERVIEW AND MANDATORY DRUG TESTING IS REQUIRED.  (Paid by the Committee)

APPRENTICESHIP TEST PREPARATION

 Apprenticeship programs offered through San Diego & Imperial Counties Pipetrades require the following scores on the College Placement Test held at San Diego Community College.

Elementary Algebra:  44 or higher

Arithmetic test:  placement into Math 95  ( M3 ) or higher

Reading test:  placement into English 56  ( R4 ) or higher

  Writing test:  placement into English 51  ( W4 ) or higher

 You are allowed to take the test two times within a 6-month period.  If you don’t pass after 2 attempts, you must wait for 6 months (after the second attempt) before testing again. 

1.      Before testing, you must submit a College Application. This can be done online at www.sdccd.net. (Click Online College Application) or you may submit an application in person at the San Diego Community College Admissions Office, 1313 12th Ave, San Diego, Rm A-112. Test scores cannot be processed without an up-to-date application!

2.      If you feel that your English/Math skills are up to date, call the San Diego Community College Counseling Office at 619/388-3540, to schedule an appointment for the placement test.  Tell the person who takes your call that you are applying for the Pipetrades apprenticeship program and they will schedule your appointment for the placement test by telephone.

3.      If you prefer to refresh your English/Math skills before taking the placement test, you can attend FREE review classes. These are open entry classes that may be started at almost anytime. Locations and phone numbers are provided where the review classes are held.   Please call the review location for available class times.  

4.  Take this flyer with you to the review class and inform the instructor that you need to prepare for the placement test for the Plumbers & Pipefitters Apprenticeship Program and that you need to meet the above skill levels in English and Math. The instructor will have you register for the class by filling out a simple form. There is NO COST for the class. The instructor can determine the type of review best suited to your current skills. 

 

5.   Apprentice candidates who do not pass the placement test can improve their skills by taking the review class (see step 3 & 4 above) or by attending the appropriate San Diego Community College remedial class as recommended on the placement test result printout. The following Independent Learning Labs are operated by the Continuing Education Division of the San Diego Community College District. All classes are offered free of charge, and you may register in class. You may begin your studies any time during the semester in most cases. If classes are full, however, you may be put on a waiting list. Many locations have morning and evening classes available. Call the phone numbers listed below for information.
