Apprenticeship - It's All About Standards

We have seven training centers, with over 700 apprentices currently in training in the Southern California region. Our training centers are in Compton, Gardena, San Diego, Colton, Ventura, Buellton and San Luis Obispo, CA.

Our sixty-eight instructors are all accredited through the Cal State Teaching System, and they all have received a minimum of an additional five years of Instructor Training at the United Association's Instructor Training Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

WHERE COMPETENCY BEGINS:

Apprenticeship is the Heart and Soul of our Union

By setting high standards, apprenticeship training maintains quality and productivity. By limiting entry into the industry as an apprentice based on need, it guards against an oversupply of unqualified labor.

Apprenticeship, jointly administered by labor and management, is a time-tested model for what education is all about giving young people usable skills to make a contribution in the real world. The apprenticeship system works because of many people: contractors, U. A. district councils, local unions, and thousands of instructors, journeymen and apprentices.

Our entry level members come out of their five year, two nights per-week apprenticeship, coordinated with on the job training, instilled with a full understanding of the basics of the trade, and a highly developed sense of what the next twenty years looks like in the industry. They are fully rounded craft workers, ready and able to meet whatever challenges are set by their employers.
