BRAZING
TEST PARAMETERS
There
must be two (2) vertically brazed 1&1\2" copper joints. This is accomplished by brazing one
side of the coupling in an up feed manner. Then rotate the entire coupon 180
degrees and braze the other side in an up feed manner. Do not wait for the joint
to cool off completely before turning. Keep the purge on all the time until
finished and the entire coupon is cool to the touch.
The
two (2) horizontal joints are accomplished in the “normal” fashion but you must mark
the top of the coupon before starting by either a notch or other identifying
mark, that can be easily found after brazing, to identify the top when cutting
the 1\2" strap out of the top 45 degree quadrant (see the illustration
following).
Upon
completion, a 1/2" specimen (strap) must be cut from both the vertical and
horizontal coupon. Exact
measurement is not required, however, 1/4" is too small and 1” is too
large and both are reasons for rejection. Do it right the first time. Further,
the strap from the vertical coupon may be cut from anywhere around the
circumference, BUT the horizontal MUST be cut from the 1:30 or 10:30 (0-clock)
positions ONLY (45-degree angle in either of the top 90-degree quadrants). If
you have, any questions ask the proctor before doing the work. There is paper
work explaining the entire process available at the testing site.
Finally
each coupon and strap must be legibly marked by use of the vibrating pencil or
“sharpie” felt pen with your name, SSN #, and position of the joint (either
H for horiz. or V for vert.). No legible markings-no grade. Bending and/or buffing the edges of the
straps are OK. Do not use tape to keep the pieces together for mailing. Be sure
the proctor checks your work and signs the paperwork in the proper place.
Once successfully completed, this certification is good for a maximum of six(6) months (an ASME code requirement). Prior to the expiration date, you must send continuity paperwork to NITC or the UA to renew your certification or you will have to re-take the proctored re certification test again to re-qualify for the certification. If you have any questions check with your local training coordinator so that the correct paperwork can be mailed to NITC or e-mailed directly to the UA on UA.NET over the internet.
