Scholarship Foundation Awards SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST RULES &INSTRUCTIONS |
January 1 through March 31 Annually
Thirty-two
(32)
high school and college scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded to the
sons and daughters of members of Pipe Trades Local Unions affiliated with the
California State Pipe Trades Council.
These
scholarships must be used for study at any accredited U.S. four (4) year
university. The California State Pipe Trades Council Scholarship Foundation
will not impose restrictions of any kind on the course of study. Recipients
may accept any other grants or awards which do not rule out scholarship aid or
other sources.
Who
May Apply
Sons
and daughters of Pipe Trades union members may apply for the scholarships. The
parent of the applicant must be a member in good standing of a local union
affiliated with the California State Pipe Trades Council for at least one (1)
year immediately preceding submission of the scholarship application.
The
applicants must be high school seniors graduating in June from a public,
private, or parochial school who are planning to attend a four (4) year
university anywhere in the United States during the academic year and who meet
the academic requirements for an entrance into the university or college of
their choice; Students selected for scholarships must have achieved not less
than a “C+” average in their high school work;
OR
Students
at an accredited four (4) year university who have achieved not less than a
“2.5 ” average in their college work. Applicants must be considered full
time students.
Awarding
Scholarships
Upon
receipt of the application and required forms, the California State Pipe
Trades Council Scholarship Foundation will submit the applications to the
Center for Labor Research and Education at a University of California for
judging by an independent outside group composed of professional educators.
Apart
from verifying the eligibility of the applicant, the California State Pipe
Trades Council Scholarship Foundation will not exercise any choice among the
various applicants or indicate in any way that one applicant should be favored
over another.
Applicants
will be given points based upon the following criteria: academic honors (2);
school activities (2); community service (2); application form (2); essay
style (4); and essay content (8) – a possible total of 20 points. The
University Scholarship Selection Committee will submit to the California State
Pipe Trades Council Scholarship Foundation the list of the finalists to be
awarded scholarships.
Scholarship
winners will be announced at the California State Pipe Trades Convention in
May annually. Winners will be notified by the Business Manager of the Local
Union to which their parent belongs, and checks will be presented to the
winners by the Business Manager of the Local Union.
INSTRUCTIONS
The
following items must be received
January
1 through March 31 Annually
1.
Application – to be completed by the applicant with the membership
verification portion to be completed by the sponsoring union.
2.
Official school transcript – to be submitted by school official and returned
directly to the California State Pipe Trades Council Scholarship Foundation by
the official completing it.
3.
Proof of college registration at a four (4) year University.
4.
Letters of recommendation – applicant should submit one to three letters of
recommendation giving information about their character and ability. These may
be from teachers, community leaders, family friends, or others who know the
applicant. Please submit the letter(s) of recommendation with the application.
5. 1,000 word essay on the subject: "What should the Pipe Trades Unions do to increase effectiveness and membership?"
It
is the responsibility of the applicant to see that all the above items are
received on time and that they are sent to:
