Created as an independent Federal agency
in 1935 to enforce the National
Labor Relations Act. Conducts secret ballot elections to determine whether
employees want union representation and investigates and remedies unfair labor
practices by unions and employers.
Federal Mediation and
Conciliation Service (FMCS): http://www.fmcs.gov/
Created by Congress in 1947 as an
independent agency to promote sound and stable labor-management relations,
FMCS offers services in the following areas: dispute resolution, preventative
mediation, alternative dispute resolution, arbitration services,
labor-management grants, and international services. FMCS links to DOL, BLS,
NLRB, FLRA, White House, Senate, House, U.S. Business Advisor.
