Local 230's Scholarship Fund

In 1995, Local 230 established the David C. Sommerville Memorial Scholarship Fund as a way to help the college bound sons and daughters of Local 230 members.   More recently Local 230 enlisted the San Diego Foundation to administer the fund.  The San Diego Foundation is a group of charitable funds set up by individuals, businesses, and organizations to make our community a better place to live and work.  Grants from these funds support charitable groups and programs working to improve the quality of life in San Diego County.  The Foundation helps manage and advise these funds so that grants are used as effectively as possible.  Many donor-advised grants support charitable donors' interests.  Some may be outside the area, but most of the funds are used here for San Diego County concerns to achieve the donors' charitable interests.  

The Foundation is a community foundation, the name of which reflects a dual role.  "Community" represents a broad spectrum of charitable interests held by hundreds of donors, a "community" of people who care and want to invest their money in improving the San Diego County area.  And the organization serves, as a "foundation" of support to connect these interests to community needs by offering administrative support, leadership and financial strength. 

With the help of the Foundation we are in the fund-raising mode.  To accomplish our goals an increase in participation is necessary.  The Local 230 Harry Hettenbach Memorial Golf Tournament is one vehicle we use to generate funds.  The proceeds of the golf tournament are tax deductible as a 501-(c)3 #95-2942581. Donations can be directly mailed to Local 230 in the name of the fund.  Members may designate their donation amount with their monthly union dues payment.  Another, method is through endowment, a gift large enough to generate interest income to use as a scholarship grant.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING TAKEN FOR THOSE QUALIFIED SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF  LOCAL 230 MEMBERS FOR 2010. REMEMBER, QUALIFIED SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF LOCAL 230 MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY TO BOTH THE LOCAL FUND AND THE CALIFORNIA STATE PIPE TRADES FUND.
