David C. Sommerville Memorial Scholarship Contest Rules
GENERAL RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS
Scholarships
will be awarded to as many qualified applicants as the fund is capable of supporting each year depending on the net income generated by the golf tournament and income derived from the endowment fund with The San Diego Foundation. All scholarships will be a minimum of $1,000.00 and must be used at an accredited US college or university. Applicants may use the scholarship monies during any undergraduate degree program and must be attending full time while carrying at least 12 credits. Applicants will be eligible to receive a maximum of two yearly scholarships from this fund.Who May Apply:
Scholarships shall be awarded based on a descending order of preference to:
1) Sons and daughters of members of Local 230
2) Stepchildren of members of Local 230
3) Grandchildren of members of Local 230
4) Any of the above while attending a post graduate degree program, in the same order
The parent or grandparent member of Local 230 must be in good standing at the time of the scholarship award.
The applicants shall be high school students that will be graduating in the current year and planning on attending college, currently enrolled college students, or meet the academic requirements for entrance into a US college. Students applying for scholarships must have achieved not less than a 2.5 (C+) average in their high school grades or be maintaining the same average in their current college work.
Applications will be accepted between January 1 and March 31 of each year.
Awarding scholarships:
Applicants will be given points based upon the following criteria: academic honors (0-2), school activities (0-2), community service (0-2), application form (0-2), essay style (0-4), essay content (0-8) for a possible 20 points.
Additional separate scholarship award information may be requested to determine if additional points may be used to calculate the final scores. If applicants are receiving additional scholarship support, points will be awarded on a descending order based on the amounts of the additional scholarships as follows:
$00.00 to $5000.00 6 points
$5001.00 to $10,000.00 5 points
$10,001.00 to $15,000.00 4 points
$15,001.00 to $20,000.00 3 points
$20,001.00 to $25,000.00 2 points
$25,001.00 and over 0 points
The Local 230 Executive Board will request all supporting documentation and will be the sole judge on the awarding of scholarships based on points.
Scholarship winners will be announced at the May general membership meeting.
Instructions:
1) Application to be completed by the applicant with the membership verification portion completed by the Local 230 member.
2) Official school transcript
3) Proof of college registration or pending acceptance qualification letter
4) Up to three letters of recommendation from teachers, community leaders, family friends, or others as to the character and ability of the applicant.
5) 1000 word essay based on the subject as requested on the yearly application
6) Proof of relationship to Local 230 member may be requested
